The Little Rickshaw, Aldinga

A lovely meal

We booked dinner at The Little Rickshaw recently as a Kris Kringle Xmas gift for my sister Steph and husband Ian. It’s a favourite of ours but they hadn’t eaten there before and, of course, we were all looking forward to it! Eating out is such a treat.

We weren’t disappointed. On reflection, we thought it was the best meal we’ve had there and Steph reckons it’s the best meal she’s had anywhere! Wow.

Why so good? The food, of course. All of the dishes in the set menu banquet were brilliant, with great detail in their preparation. The proprietor Mike stopped by our table to collect our dishes at one point and we got into a conversation about the care that goes into preparation of the paw paw salad. Just one of the ingredients in it alone takes over an hour of toasting with 2 different spice mixes and we all agreed that it’s the little things that make all the difference.

There’s a myriad of other things which make a memorable dining experience like the service, and that too was excellent. We were never left wondering whether we’d been forgotten or waiting too long for anything. And the dishes were well explained as they were served. The drinks list was interesting and well chosen (including house made hard lemonade for example or spicy plum margarita). We had wine by the glass from a short but good selection of mostly local wines (nice glassware too). The atmosphere is great (rustic chic with an Asian accent). And the food just kept stopping our conversation in appreciation!

If you can find a way to make it happen, go, but plan in advance as it’s often booked out.

Every dish was exquisite, right down to the pistachio praline parfait.
